Considering A Career in Child Care

Some parents, when faced with several young children of their own, often decide to become a child care provider themselves. They may choose to offer home care for other parents in order to be able to stay close with their own children while earning money by caring for other's children as well.

Even after their children enter school, they continue to provide care for other parents as the career can be rewarding, both personally and financially. If you are interested in doing the same, there are some things to consider.

Not everyone has the temperament to be a child care provider.

Is It Enough To Love Kids?

You may be a good parent, you love your kids and no one doubts that. However, just because you are good at dealing with your own children, doesn't mean you are good at dealing with other childen, who may display different behaviour to your own children, or the business of running a centre. Consider your temperament, your organizational skills, ability to adapt, your levels of patience, your business skills, and your ability to learn. You will need to hone all of these qualities to deal with the plethora of business requirements, and types of kids you are likely to come into contact with over an extended period of time.

Double-check your list of skills and work on those that require work. Do this before you start your business to ensure the best chance at success.

Which type of child care do you choose?

If you are considering becoming a child care provider, determine what type of child care service you will focus on, and how that fits in to your daily life. For example, there are long day care child care centres which care for infants through preschoolers which, if you work at the centre, will require a great amount of your time.

Then, there are outside school hours care providers who work in the morning, afternoon and vacation times only. This can be a great option for people wanting limited work hours.

At home child care providers really set their own opening and closing times, and get to work from home. Although this is not ideal for everyone, for some, it is the perfect compromise.

Child Care Provider Licensing Laws Vary - make sure you check yours

If you are interested in opening a registered and licenced child care center facility you will need to be licensed by various federal and state bodies. There are also requirements that vary from state to state but in general there are requirements for child care professionals to meet educational/training requirements, safety standards etc., and be inspected regularly for accreditation purposes. The facility has to comply with building, fire and zoning regulations on a local government level. Child care staffing ratio's are set nationally but change regularly so it is important to check the current requirements.

What Child to Carer Ratio is Best?

Staff to child ratios are set nationally, but depend primarily on the age of the children, and on what type of care options are offered. Ratio can be different between for the in-home child care provider, nanny, au pair, or long day care child care facility. Suitably qualified centre Directors are also a prerequisite and have a set ratio to children.

Working With Parents as Well as Kids?

Caring for kids doesn't stop at dealing with children. A close relationship with the parents is also necessary, and they can often be more demanding than the children. Liability, financial and learning difficulties are all issues that the average carer must raise with parents from time to time. Clearly, none of these are particularly pleasant subjects so it is important you engage them at other times to ensure they share in the joy of your childs growth at the centre, not just the unpleasant parts.
